Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind celebrates its 25th Anniversary

"In March 1984, The Thornton’s came to Canada from England with a dream in their hearts. To start a professional guide dog school.

Armed with enthusiasm and knowledge they both acquired back in England, the Thornton’s took on a task that few would.

They rented a property in the National Capital Commission, where they ran the school. The garage was transformed into a kennel where they hosted their first dogs.

Jane Thornton, Co-Founder & C.O.O. remembers “The first six months were very difficult, both emotionally and financially, with many highs and lows”.

With much credit given to the first working Board of Directors, just three years later in 1987, they were able to move to the beautiful custom-built National Training Centre. “They (Board of Directors) made the dream become a reality a lot sooner than we ever thought possible. I can remember so plainly, transporting the dogs from converted garage with no running water to a kennel with heating and air conditioning” adds Jane Thornton.

“From the very first time I drove down the driveway at the Training Centre, I have always been proud to do so”, says Jane Thornton, “I am very lucky to do this each day, as I do not feel I am going to work, but rather going to a place where I enjoy being very much.” She adds.

It is difficult to sum up the many accomplishments of CGDB during this quarter of a century, but needless to say, they are all a result of the hard work, dedication and goodwill of many people. “Because of everyone involved, from our clients, Board of Directors, donors, volunteers and the staff, we are here today to celebrate.” says Jane Thornton.

From the first guide dog team, John & Sasha, to the now six-hundred and thirty-fifth team, from the west coast to the east, from the few pennies donated by a child who has saved his/her allowance to the largest sponsorship given, all and everyone should rejoice today for the incredible teamwork put forth, for the laughter and at times the inevitable tears, all part of the wonderful 25 years of CGDB’s history.

We look forward to continuing with our mandate and being able to celebrate with you all for many, many years to come!"
