Career Change Dogs

A Change of Plans

Career change dogs are dogs that have been assessed and found to be unsuitable, either behaviourally or physically, to take on the demanding role of a guide dog.

Our list of applicants interested in purchasing a career change dog rarely opens.  The demand far outweighs the supply.  Due to high demand, the career change program is only local, within 200 kms. of our National Training Centre in Manotick, Ontario.

If the application list opens (depending on whether we need more people), it will open on the first business day of the month. Requests are taken by telephone only and are done on a first-come, first-served basis, when we open at 8:30 am EST. The list opens for only a few minutes before closing again.  The list does not remain open and is not guaranteed to be open every month.

If you are successful in getting through to the first business day and the list is open, an application form is then sent to you for your completion. Once your application is accepted, we cannot guarantee when you will receive a dog, as this is dependent on how many dogs do not make the grade to become a guide dog.  We do not accept follow up calls.  We will contact you when a suitable dog becomes available.

Here are some important facts to know before applying for a career change dog from Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind.

  • The dogs are generally 14-18 months old.
  • The dogs are always neutered/spayed.
  • Vaccinations are all up to date and every dog has received the highest quality health care.
  • Purchasers must live within 200 kms. of our National Training Centre in Manotick, Ontario (within Canada), no exceptions.
  • There must be an adult home during the day, as you cannot leave the dog at home alone all day while at work or school.
  • You must have a secure yard or area in the yard for the dog.
  • Dogs are sold for $1,500 plus HST (subject to change).

If you wish to call on the first business day of the month our number is (613) 692-7777.  We accept calls promptly at 8:30 am EST.  Calls before 8:30 am are not accepted.  The application list will never open at other times, and there is no chance of jumping the queue.

Thank you for your interest in our career change dogs.
